The 2019 President’s Award of Recognition was presented to
IAN JAMES LORD
in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advancement of land economics

Ian James Lord is recognized as one of Canada’s leading counsel, litigators, educators and facilitators in dispute resolution involving land development.
Since 1977, Ian has paralleled his legal practice related to municipal planning and development approvals for both the private and public sectors with teaching at Ryerson University, York University and through continuing education programs of the Ontario Professional Planners
Institute. Since 2014, he has restricted his practice to advancing mediation in municipal dispute resolution.
In December, 2016, Ian was appointed to serve as the first Chair of the City’s new statutory tribunal, the Toronto Local Appeal Body (‘TLAB’) which provides an independent public forum for the adjudication of land use disputes related to applications under Sections 45 and 53 of the Planning Act.
Ian was initiated into LAI by the Simcoe Chapter in 1988. Over the course of more than 20 years, he served the Chapter in a wide range of capacities, including President (2000-02); Vice President; Program Chair; Historian; and Director of International Affairs.
In addition to his service to the Chapter, Ian also served at the International level as Secretary; Regional Vice President; Chair of the International By-Laws Committee; 1st Vice President; Chair of the Chapter Services Committee; and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors.
During his term as International President from 2011-13, Ian directed the development and approval of LAI’s 2012-17 Strategic Plan. He has continually supported LAI, applying his legal background to strengthen its governance and document its principles and best practices.
In 2016, Ian was named as an International Fellow of LAI in recognition of his dedication to promoting and strengthening the organization. The designation of International Fellow is given to a member “whose efforts have significantly advanced the purposes, organization, or growth of Lambda Alpha.
